A newly built eco-home in central Totnes. Ben and Ruth's house, Earth Spring, was designed by Helen Lucas Architects and built by Terra Perma, a local contractor specialising in ecological construction. The house is built fom I-joist timber frame, fabricated on site, insulated with Warmcell and Steico wood fibre boards. The roof is zinc, and the external walls a mixture of red cedar cladding and lime render.

The house is super-insulated and the only heating appliance is a very small (2kw) wood burner. The main heating for the house is passive solar - the sun - through the large windows in the southern elevation. A 35 tonne pulverised fuel ash slab in the downstairs floor holds heat which is distributed via a passive stack system throughout the house.

The stairs, kitchen and balcony were all designed and built by local firms. The garden will be planted with an edible landscape - a permaculture design - to feed both the house’s residents and local wildlife.
